After a 40-year career in the City of London as a professional economist and strategist, it is impossible for me simply to stop writing about issues of the day. During my career, my principle focus was on the UK and its position in the global economy. As much as anything, I would consider myself to be a social scientist. Economics is not a quasi-natural science (although it is often taught that way); it is a study of the material and financial structure of a society. As such, it just one angle on the way a social grouping behaves. It is irrelevant unless all the other angles are also covered. So, any economic analysis has to be carried out alongside all the other types of analysis that allow us to gain a full understanding of whatever it is that is being looked at.
In this blog, it is my intention to comment on issues of the day, mainly from the standpoint of an economist, but also from the standpoint of an economist who see himself as first and foremost a social scientist.
